What’s actually going on?
Most people are reading the wrong book for the problem they actually have.
Describe your situation. This reads past what you asked for, tells you what is actually in the way, and gives you three books in a deliberate order with something to do between each one.
A worked example
“I earn TSh 600,000 a month, have no savings, want to start a business, but I'm planning to spend TSh 200,000 on my girlfriend because I want to prove I care.”
What’s actually going on
The spend is a third of your month.
Not the problem on its own — the problem is that it is going out of an account with nothing behind it.
You're buying proof of love with money that is also your only buffer.
If something breaks next week, the gesture and the business both die.
What to fix first
Put a floor under yourself before the business, because right now both plans are drawing on the same TSh 600,000.
Book 01FOUNDATION
The Psychology of Money
Morgan Housel
This one comes first because the issue is what money means to you, not what it does.
Before book 02
Write down what the TSh 200,000 is actually buying. Then decide the number you can spend without touching a buffer.
Book 02MECHANISM
Atomic Habits
James Clear
Second, because a buffer is a repeated behaviour rather than a decision you make once.
Before book 03
Bank a fixed amount on payday, three months running, before anything else moves.
Book 03APPLICATION
The Lean Startup
Eric Ries
Last, because by then you will have capital and proof you can hold to a system.
Note what it did not do. It did not recommend a relationship book, it did not moralise about the girlfriend, and it did not say the goal was wrong. Only that the order was.
